Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTC) participated in the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) commemorations held in Pandamatenga in the Chobe district. The event was held under the theme “Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development”. The main aim of WTSID is to raise global awareness on how to bridge the gap regarding the use of the latest technology in Third World countries.
As part of BTC’s commitment to uplift the communities they operate in, BTC donated internet connectivity, smartboards as well as a computer to Lesoma Primary School to improve the pass rate for students in Lesoma and surrounding areas to cement SDG 4 and 11 more on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and making communities inclusive, resilient and sustainable. Additionally, BTC donated two (2) computers and a heavy-duty printer/photocopier to Pandematenga main Kgotla. The equipment will be used by the village leadership as well as residents of Pandamatenga. Lastly, BTC donated a 46-inch television set, a set top box, satellite dish and a computer to Lesoma clinic with all donations valued at P203,566.92.
Prior to the commemoration of WTISD, BTC participated in the Girls in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) day commemorations under the themed “Leadership” to give women and girl child exposure in leadership positions, fostering inspiration and breaking down barriers that hinder their progress and celebrates the power of digital innovation in advancing sustainable development thus supporting SDG 5 thus achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls. BTC facilitated training to over 60 students in Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning (ML) as well as Digital Content Creation.
