Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) donated equipment worth over seventy thousand Pula (P70.000) to Bothakga Primary School’s special unit in Lobatse. The Bothakga Primary School donation initiative was spearheaded by the BTC Corporate Social Investment Movement, which is a body that is driven by BTC staff members who are passionate about giving back to their communities and drives BTC`s sustainable investment. The school’s special unit has students with autism, hypertension hyperactivity disorder, down syndrome, speech problems and cerebral palsy amongst others.
The special needs unit at Bothakga Primary School, is a catchment school for areas around Lobatse. The donation speaks to inclusivity which is advocated by United Nations`s social development goals and stated that inclusivity means giving education to all children regardless of whether they are able or disabled and it is also stated in the Children’s Act that every child has a right to education.
“With donated wheelchairs, we have arranged with parents to help care givers with learners to access the transport that is currently used without their wheelchairs. Laptops and printers have offered valuable support for both easy records keeping, research, design diagrams, and communication through mail and letters to different stakeholders. Printers help with printing colorful visual aids making learning more active than passive. All learners have their own books and it’s easy to manage them effectively and assess the progress of learners. Ms. Bontle Kgosana – Bothakga Primary School Special Education Unit
