What is the Smega?

Smega is the BTC mobile money service that allows you to manage your money from your mobile phone from anywhere you are whenever you want.

Do I need a bank account to use Smega?

No, you don’t need to have a bank account. This is because Smega is meant to be used by everyone and especially people who do not have a bank account.

Can I use Smega if I am not a BTC Mobile customer?

No. First you need to get a BTC Mobile SIM card/number and have it registered in your name. Only then can you register for Smega and begin to enjoy its benefits and the convenience it offers.

Where can I register for Smega?

You can register at any BTC Shop across Botswana. You can also register at any of our approved agents

If I have more than one (1) BTC Mobile number, can I register for Smega on all my numbers?

No. You can only register one Smega account on only one of your BTC Mobile numbers. This is a requirement by the financial regulator, Bank of Botswana.

All you need for a Smega Card is P35

Will I have to pay any fees to operate my Smega wallet/account?

Yes. The services fees will be applied automatically and according to the transactions you do. The service will be applied on completed transactions only which you will have validated with your Smega PIN. However, some transactions will be FREE of charge, e.g. opening or registering a Smega account, PIN Change, Balance Check. Please refer to our website www.btc.bw for a full list of tariffs.

How much can I deposit into my Smega wallet?

You can deposit up to P10,000 in a single transaction or P15,000 per day and you can have a maximum balance of P30,000 per month.

How do I put money into my Smega account?

You can visit any of the BTC Shops and/or approved agents across Botswana. If you have a bank account with one of the partner banks (Absa & Standard Chartered Bank), you can also make a direct electronic deposit from your bank account into your Smega account or any of your preferred beneficiary with a Smega account.

Do I always need to have a minimum balance in my Smega wallet to use my wallet?

No. Some transactions are absolutely FREE (e.g. PIN Change), so you can even have a zero balance in your account. However, you will not be able to make any financial transactions (e.g. buy airtime) until you make a deposit into your wallet.

How safe is my money?

Your money is safe in your Smega account since every transaction you do has to be verified with your PIN that you would have defined when you opened the account. It is important that you keep this PIN to yourself and never share it with anyone else.

How many times can I change my PIN?

You can change your Smega PIN as often as you wish.

What do I do if I forget my PIN or lock is locked?

The system allows you a maximum of three (3) attempts to capture your PIN. If you enter your PIN incorrectly 3 consecutive times, your account will be automatically locked. When this happens or you have simply forgotten your PIN you can call the BTC call centre for assistance. A customer care representative will first verify your account information by asking you some security questions. After successful verification, your PIN will be reset and you will receive an sms notification with a temporary PIN. For security reasons, you will be prompted to change the temporary to one of your own. You will not be able to conduct any further activity on your Smega account until you have changed the temporary PIN too your own personalised PIN.

What are the benefits of having a Smega account?

Having a Smega account gives you the affordable convenience of transacting on your mobile phone and avoiding having to stand in long queues to get services. You can do the following at your own convenience, from anytime and anywhere:

  • Do airtime top-up and/or data bundles (for you or another BTC Mobile customer)
  • Pay your BTC Mobile postpaid bill and water bill
  • Buy prepaid electricity
  • Transfer money to any of your beneficiaries
  • Pay for goods and services with your Visa card anywhere in the world as well as online
  • Check your account balance and change your PIN for FREE
  • You can keep your money in your Smega account, which is safer than keeping the physical cash with you as you may lose it or it could be stolen from you.
  • Your employer can pay your wages/salary/travel allowance into your account
  • Send and receive money in and outside of Botswana

What do I do if I make a mistake and send money to a wrong account?

If you sent money to the wrong beneficiary, you can call the BTC customer contact for assistance. If the money is still in that beneficiary’s account, we will help reverse it to your account. However, we will not be in a position to assist in a situation where the account owner has already used the funds. If you sent money to an account that does not exist, the money will go back into your account after 72hrs of the transfer being completed.

Will I lose my money if I lose my phone/SIM card?

No. Your money is still safe because it is stored on the Smega platform, not on your phone or SIM card. Your SIM card and phone are simply tools that enable you to access your money. You can have your SIM card replaced at any BTC Shop, with the same BTC Mobile number and you will have access to your money again. You can also contact the BTC customer contact centre and ask that they temporarily block your account until you have replaced your phone and SIM card. Your PIN and your balance will remain unchanged. Always remember your PIN must always be known to you and nobody else. It is your sole responsibility.
